Honda Motor Co said on Tuesday it was recalling 1.79 million vehicles like Accord, CR-V worldwide in four separate campaigns, including some linked to reported fires. The Honda recall of its CR-V, Accord cover 1.4 million vehicles in the United States. More than 300,000 recalls including Honda Accord are being recalled over faulty seat belts issue.
Honda recalls Accords along with others
The Japanese automaker Honda said one recall covers 268,000 2002-2006 model year CR-V vehicles in the United States to replace power window master switches. Honda said there had been no reported injuries, but 16 fires reported related to the issue.
Honda conducted a prior recall of the power window master switches in 2012. The new Honda Accord recall is in response to moisture-related failures of switches repaired under the previous campaign.
Honda recalls Accords for software issue
Honda is also recalling about 735,000 U.S. 2018-2020 Accord. This is along with recall of Accord Hybrid and 2019-2020 Insight vehicles to update the Body Control Module software. A programming flaw could disrupt communication causing illumination of several warning lights and malfunction of electronic components, it said, including “the rear view camera display, turn signals and windshield wipers.”
Accord belt issue
In a notice filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Tuesday, Honda said some front seat belts issue in 2023-2024 Accords and HR-Vs have missing pretensioner rivets. A pretensioner is the seat belt component that tightens it in place during an accident, preventing the seat occupant from flying forward. Defective pretensioners increase the risk of injury in the event of a collision, Honda said in the notice.
According to the NHTSA, wearing a seat belt in a passenger car decreases the likelihood of death by 45% and reduces the risk of moderate and critical injury by 50%.
Complaints for Honda cars
In a safety recall of Accord report also filed with the NHTSA, Honda said it received the initial complaint about the seat belt issue in May. However, it “received the affected parts and began to investigate the issue” on September 20 and started with Accord recall.
As of November 16, Honda said it has not received any reports of injuries or deaths as a result of the Accord or other vehicles missing seat belt issue.
Accord recall along with other vehicles is the second major recall by Honda in just over a week. On November 17, the company announced a recall of some 250,000 cars including Accord due to a manufacturing error that may damage the engine. Honda has issued 14 other recalls this year, affecting more than 1 million vehicles in total.
Honda is also issuing two recalls covering 430,000 U.S. vehicles in 22 U.S. states and the District of Columbia with significant road salt use to inspect and potentially replace front drive shafts. Both are in response to possible breakage of the drive shafts due to corrosion. No injuries have been reported in relation any of the recalls, the company said.
Honda on the vehicle recall
Honda said repair parts are not available for all vehicles involved in the drive shaft recalls. The recalls cover some 2012 Honda Civic Hybrid, 2007-2014 Honda Fit, 2013-2015 Acura ILX 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid and 2013-2015 Honda Accord vehicles. No crashes have been reported in the drive shaft or software recalls.
Honda did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Accord belt issue or other software recalls.
Owners affected by this Accord recall along with other vehicles will be contacted by mail after January 8, 2024, and will be able to take their vehicle to be inspected at a Honda dealership. Dealers will replace the necessary part free of charge.
