Integrated Environmental Solutions

North America’s leading provider of comprehensive environmental solutions, Waste Management Inc.’s mission is to maximize resource value, while minimizing – and even eliminating – environmental impact, for the betterment of the economy and environment.

With an employee strength of 45,000, Waste Management Inc. partners with customers and communities to manage and reduce waste from collection to disposal, while recovering valuable resources and creating clean, renewable energy.

Serving over 20 million residential, industrial, municipal and commercial customers, WM recorded a revenue of $12.52 billion in 2010.

Projects and Initiatives

Waste Management Inc has developed a number of proactive projects and initiatives, which draw on their considerable resources and experience, towards furthering the waste and recycling industries.

As North America’s largest recycler, Waste Management managed more than 7 million tons of recyclable commodities in 2009. The company expects this amount of material they manage to increase to more than 20 million tons per year by the year 2020.

With the help of their waste recycling and management technologies, Waste Management Inc presently creates enough energy to power more than 1 million homes every year. By 2020, this renewable energy leader expects to double that output, creating enough energy to power more than 2 million homes.

Waste Management Inc had 119 landfill-gas-to-energy projects producing 540 megawatts of power by the end of 2009. This amount of energy is the equivalent of powering approximately 400,000 homes.

Wheelabrator Technologies, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Waste Management Inc., owns or operates 16 waste-to-energy plants and five independent power production facilities in the U.S. that generate enough energy to power more than 900,000 homes.

With around 1000 natural gas-powered trucks in their fleet, the company has also implemented technology that reduces the fuel burn of every truck in their fleet. When fully implemented, Waste Management Inc expects this to translate into a saving of 9 million gallons of fuel per year.

Through a joint venture with the Linde Group, Waste Management Inc has built a plant that converts landfill gas into over 13,000 gallons of liquefied natural gas per day for use as fuel in the company’s trucks.

Green Energy

Waste Management Inc.’s business practices are designed on working with the various stakeholders in society – the government, business partners and community partners – to extract value from waste in ways that protect and enhance the environment.

With the goal of making “reduce, reuse, and recycle” the watchwords of every family and company in North America, Waste Management Inc has dedicated itself to developing a number of clean, alternative ways to produce power, and hence reduce the threat of exhausting the world’s natural resources.

By developing advanced technologies to reduce waste, increasing recycling and reuse, creating safer treatment and disposal options, developing sources of renewable energy and sharing the benefits of their learning and innovation with clients and collaborators, Waste Management Inc., is committed to contributing to creating a more sustainable world.

Cutting Costs by Waste Recycling

Waste Management Inc promotes the idea of cost saving through the reduction of overall waste volumes.

The company’s experts work with different businesses towards creating customized programs that help operationalize improvements, meet regulatory requirements, increase diversion rates and serve the greater environment.
