Many people aspire to be a leader. But the sad reality is that most are exceptional individual contributors. Leadership is as much an art as it is a skill, and requires time and practice to perfect. Jack Welch put it succinctly when he said, “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.” Leadership requires you to be a friend and a manager and perfecting this balancing act can be tough leading to some common leadership mistakes.

As a leader, your choices impact your entire team and the organization at large. Losing a valuable employee can impact team performance and morale. So, it is up to a leader to get people to do what they want while pushing them to be the best version of themselves.

Leadership mistakes

Let us delve into the three most common leadership mistakes made by leaders.

Leadership eventually comes down to how well leaders know themselves and their teams, and how they use this to grow outside their comfort zone.

So, what are the common leadership mistakes that cost organizations good employees and how can you avoid them? Is leadership just about a title and getting employees to follow your lead?

Micromanagement

Yes, leadership is about delegation. But it also calls for trust and gives employees the autonomy to manage their work. A leader’s role can be compared to a help desk at any major institution. You approach the help desk when you feel lost and in need of direction.

Delegating a task to an employee should be a sign that you believe them to be capable of handling it. But for some leaders, a change in their title means the ability to tell people what to do and how to do it. They also constantly pester them for minute updates, wreaking havoc with an employee’s self-esteem.

Micromanaging is one of the biggest leadership mistakes as it does more harm than good. It tells your team that you do not trust them to do their job and severely demoralizes them.

Delivering Criticism the Wrong Way

Everybody makes mistakes. Capable leaders use it as a teachable opportunity and help employees figure out a feasible solution. While constructive feedback is always welcome, publicly criticizing an employee hurts self-esteem and the residual humiliation affects performance.

Destructive criticism, Howell well-intended, can damage a team beyond repair. When done publicly, it also serves a warning to others and as the saying goes, most people leave bad bosses, not the company.

One leadership mistake that is extremely expensive is the inability to deliver criticism constructively. Leadership skills include the capacity to be empathetic even in the midst of highly-charged emotions.

Leaders must make their employees feel valued and seen, and must tone their advice in a manner that is beneficial to the employee.

Confusing approachability with friendship

A leader is expected to be approachable and friendly. But the position also calls for some hard boundaries so that you are not accused of partial behavior. Friendship between leaders and their constituents is generally frowned upon by those not in the circle.

A common leadership mistake is to either alienate former friends or being too pally with old teammates despite moving into a higher position. To avoid mistakes that result from these behaviors, leaders must find healthy boundaries between leadership and friendship in the organization.

To do this, leaders must understand and regulate their own emotions. Transparency in professional relationships will help you earn the respect of all your colleagues and keep things efficient.

Leaders fail because they often do not devote enough time to reflect over these daily activities that can significantly impact their team. Having good leadership skills calls for the ability to reflect on one’s shortcomings, understand one’s team and their motivations, and work hard to create their own leadership style.

Becoming a good leader is not a fixed process and requires constant evaluation and learning. The best leaders are always looking for ways to better themselves and their teams, and keep an open mind when it comes to feedback. Good leaders also follow the golden rule and know that they must treat employees as they wish to be treated.

Acclaimed author and motivational speaker Simon Sinek knows a thing or two about leadership. I mean, you do not write a bestseller on the subject without understanding the subject. He is also an unshakeable optimist who believes that leadership is not just about a designation, it is also an attitude.

In his book Start With Why: How Great leaders Inspire Everyone to Take Action, Sinek discusses the purpose of work.

He reveals that leaders who have the biggest influence all think, work, and act the same way — it is the opposite of what everyone else does and they are aware of the “why” behind their actions.

Simon Sinek at a Ted Talk

Let us delve into how the author inspired people to ask a crucial question of their organization and its implication on leadership.

Leaders Start with the Why

According to Sinek, every single person knows what they do. They will tell you about the products they sell and the services they offer. But very few people and organizations articulate why they do what they do.

Profits and branding are results we derive from offering these services.

One great example of an organization that practices the why is Apple. Instead of talking about how they make great computers or smartphones, the tech company draws customers’ attention to why they do it. Through its why, the company shows that every action they take defies what is expected and challenges the status quo.

The iPhone-maker is much more innovative than all its peers combined.

During the course of his research, Sinek identified a pattern and refers to it as – The Golden Circle. The theory notes that impressionable brands think beyond today and find a way to align with their customer’s emotions and values.

Why, How, and What

The three components of being a successful leader is in knowing one’s why, how and what.

Figuring out the Why

All organizations know what they do. Few of them even know the how. But very rarely do they know the why.

The why is the mission or cause of the organization. It is the reason that hooks people and customers, and inspires organizations to aim for greatness. In Sinek’s words, leaders must be clear on the why. If you don’t care about why you do something, why should others?

The author reiterates that figuring out the why is the first step to success.

How Will You Do It

The next step, after the why, is to come up with a plan to achieve your goals. While the why provides you with a purpose, the how gives you a roadmap on how to achieve your dreams.

Individuals and organizations must come up with the how — how they will go about their journey that will set them apart from the competition.

What Do You Offer

Often, when asked what a company does, people respond with the products and services they offer in place of the why.

The what is the evidence of your focus on the why. Organizations must codify their why to get to their what. What a business or an individual produces continues to evolve as per customer needs and market demands. But the why stays consistent.

The why is the lighthouse that lights the way even amidst choppy waters.

Apple embodies all these principles and had a great leader in Steve Jobs who set the tone from the start.

Why – We build great products that are user-friendly and that challenge the status quo. Their “Think Different” campaign cemented their status as a disruptor and change-maker.

How – They bring in the best minds in the business and push the boundaries of what is possible.

What – Apple produces great computers and devices that look after a customer’s well-being.

Leaders who are able to inspire others and encourage innovation start with changing their communication. No matter what their area of interest, great leaders talk about the why before moving on to the other two factors.

Having a why compels people into taking action and earns the loyalty of business partners and customers. Once the why is in place, everything else follows.

But this can put you at a disadvantage as you miss out on learning from those who have different experiences and worldview.

Often the smallest decisions have the biggest impact. The United States Navy Sea, Air, and Land (SEAL) teams, commonly known as US Navy SEALs, are well-aware of how important it is to use the right tools of decision making to create the outcomes we want.

The elite unit of soldiers are known for their dogged perseverance and for achieving the impossible.

Ryan Angold, former Navy SEAL and CEO of ADS, Inc., says that it is important to gather as much information as possible before beginning the decision-making process. He insists that one might access the right resources but it is not feasible to sit in “analysis paralysis forever. Ultimately, there’s no 100% perfect decision.” Author and ex-Navy SEAL David Silverman states that self-awareness and discipline are two characteristics that shape a leader’s efficiency.

authentic leadership
Mike Hayes, a former US Navy SEAL shares his insights on effective decision making.

VMWare Chief Digital Transformation Officer Mike Hayes, is a former US Navy SEAL Commander who has led many dangerous missions in Afghanistan knows a thing or two about making life and death decisions. He reveals,” Whether I’m making an investment decision on what the company should do right now or I’m deciding what operations the SEALs should go on, it comes down to the same decision making framework.”

According to him, authentic leadership comes down to decision making and reveals the steps he uses to arrive at the best possible decision:

Collect Data

Gathering the right data is key towards making an informed decision that will benefit the team. According to Hayes, people tend to gravitate towards like-minded people. But this can put you at a disadvantage as you miss out on learning from those who have different experiences and worldview. As someone who has worked at the White House and in finance, Hayes has experiences across different fields and stresses on the importance of building a team of people who do not think like you. This will help you plan out how to tackle worst-case scenarios while making sure your blind spots are covered.

Decide When To Make Your Decision

As a leader, time is of the essence. Hayes states, “The first decision is when to make your decision. That’s the thing that most people get wrong.” Sometimes you have days to gather data, while sometimes it is a 30-second decision on where to drop a bomb.

In such cases, it is important to know when to make a decision and to stand by it.  At times, you can even decide to postpone making a decision. He reveals that knowing when you’re at inflection requires experience. Hayes maintains that while getting information is crucial there will be times when you must operate instinctively. He adds, “Instinct is really a set of experiences that you can’t quite crystallize, but that you extract logic from.”

The most important part is to not wait too long as time is of the essence. The US Navy SEAL asserts that the impact of a decision can be lessened because you hesitate too long.

Be Adaptable and Open to Change

Acknowledge your imperfections. Sometimes, decisions can backfire and result in losses. During such times, it is necessary to course correct before moving forward and it is important to be humble to acknowledge one’s failures.

“When making decisions, a lot of senior leaders let their ego get in their way,” says Hayes. “They think that reversing course is going to make them look bad. You need to be comfortable saying, ‘There’s new information, let me reassess. We’re going to reverse course.’ That is the ultimate sign of leadership because it’s a sign of comfort in your own skin and not needing to look good in front of an organization. Instead, you’re putting the organization before yourself and doing the right thing.” Being willing to acknowledge your mistakes and course correct also elevates you in the eyes of your colleagues. They recognize that you want the best for everyone and will in turn pitch in their best. Authentic leadership also includes being honest about one’s weaknesses.

Hard work and luck is not the only requirement to become successful in life. There are various reasons why some people are able to make it to the top while some people are made to follow them. To become successful in life, it is very important to strike the right balance. Stability in life helps achieve greatness. Therefore you shall always notice that great leaders live a steady and a balanced life by following a certain habits. It is good to know the things successful leaders do in order to reach there the way they did and maintain a position throughout.

A List of Things Successful Leaders Do:

Cracking the Day before the Crack of Dawn

Early to bed and early to rise makes an outlier healthy, wealthy, and wise. All great leaders will always see to it that they wake up early. When you start your day early, you tend to get that momentum where you feel energetic and jumpy. Waking late in the mornings can upset the body system, thus making you feeling lethargic and sluggish.  Great leaders will never wake up after sunrise. In fact, by sunrise they tend to complete half their chores and get ready for work. Mornings are considered to be the most creative time of the day and outliers see to it that they make the most of it by starting on a fresh and enlightening note.

No means NO

People often feel that those who say no are rude and selfish. It is a misconception that people who deny things to others are not good people. In fact, people will only be able to make it to the top of the ladder if they learn to refuse in life. It is easy to say yes and make people happy. We need to realize that our life is not based on pleasing people. In order to lead a fruitful life, it is important to make yourself and your goals a priority. Saying no is the only way one can stop working to please others and work in the direction of reaching at the top of the tree. Outliers in society reach great heights because they learn the art of saying no in order to live life according to their own terms.

Workouts, Greens, and Proteins

Successful people are constantly seen working and slogging, putting extra efforts, and constantly on their toes. A good exercise goes a long way in keeping you fit to strive for more. To get into the groove, they see to it that they indulge in exercises so that they remain fit to toil harder. The second most important thing that great leaders follow, to achieve a fit lifestyle, is healthy eating. It does not mean that they don’t indulge in some good fried bacon or fine alcohol. Overall, successful people see to it that they maintain a proper diet with the necessary greens and proteins. Eating heavy food can make a person lazy and sleepy. Feeling slothful is not something a great person will have in their dictionary. Therefore, in order to work effectively and be energetic, exercise and healthy diets are essential to get at the top of the tree.

Mindful Meditation

You will always notice that great leaders will always be calm and composed at all times. They will be highly attentive to whatever you say and would respond to situations – not react. This can be achieved through mindful meditation. A thriving person is required to take control of circumstances and guide his/her team through any difficulty without overreacting. They will never begin their day by getting anxious from checking their phones and mails. But, indulge in some meditation so that they can achieve inner peace to help them through the day. Mindfulness helps attain focus on the ‘present.’ Those who have achieved prosperity, will always posses the art of providing undivided attention and focus on one thing at a time.

(Gr)Attitude

Top dogs in any society achieve a particular status through their attitude. They will always have their attitude in check and will constantly remain grounded, not boasting of their achievements. Gratitude is included in every flourishing person. Adding to that, the leader will always be gracious enough to acknowledge those around him. People look up to great leaders because of their humble nature and not their popularity or bank balance. The correct attitude will not only help one reach great heights, but also maintain and enjoy the position. A great leader will not just have lots of money and a good sense of humor but, will also possess qualities of being soft-spoken and thankful to those who work under him/her. People at the top incorporate this through mindfulness. They are always grateful for being alive and blessed.

Get Rest, Go!

Every successful leader will possess an impressive amount of energy. But that level energy can only be maintained if they take proper amount of rest. During weekends and holidays, most of the outliers see to it that they take time off work and spend quality time with their family and friends. A good rest works like a charger which is of utmost importance in wealthy peoples’ lives. A good rest helps the mind work faster and be more creative as well.

Read to Lead

Great leaders will always read and be aware of things going on around them. A leader may not possess knowledge about everything but, books help in bringing the knowledge to them. Reading extensively helps in making important decisions. They not only tend to read newspapers and magazines, but also novels, encyclopedias, autobiographies, old literature, etcetera. Reading helps in shaping a leader to become wiser and more aware. An outlier will not only read in order to get knowledge but also form it into a hobby. It helps in forming an informed opinion and thus, great leaders will always be the ones to make the right choices, even when others fail to see the results.

Family First

To quote Michael J Fox, “Family is not an important thing, it’s everything.” A flourishing person will never prioritize work over family. Families are integral part of everyone’s lives and they are the only ones who stand by you, even when others tend to give up on you. Family is the only motivation that is constant. Great leaders will never stop devoting time to their families. Family values like love, respect, giving space, understanding, etcetera helps a thriving person to be someone who others looks up to. Therefore, families are of utmost importance, and outliers will always make their loved ones a priority. Moreover, weekends and holiday times are spent with family to de-stress and feel rejuvenated.

things-successful-do.7

Get set, Note!

A successful leader will always have things noted down in their “little black diary.” The most important entity for any great leader is their journal. They make use of them to not only plan their days’ work but also their monthly and annual agendas. Wealthy people keep thinking on various ideas, which cannot be remembered, if not noted down. Maintaining a journal is the most effective way to work and reach your way to the top. At business, you cannot afford to be absent-minded and forgetful. A journal is always handy to jot down assignments and meetings, as well as the thoughts that keep coming up in your mind.

things-successful-do.4
The most important entity for any great leader is their journal.

Smile an everlasting smile…

And last but not the least, every successful person will put up a smile on his/her face, whatever may be the troubles. Every flourishing person go through tough times. And although the troubles may not be constant, a smile never fails to show up. This is by far, the best quality of a great leader. Successful people will always work with a smile on their face to show everyone that they are not weak and worried of anything. But, that does not mean they don’t feel low and weak. Outliers will always hide their vulnerabilities with a smile and keep fighting their way to the top. This is a major lesson we must incorporate in our lives as well. To quote a famous line, “Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Cry, and you cry alone.”

things-successful-do.9
Successful people will always work with a smile on their face to show everyone that they are not weak.

Reaching at the top of the ladder is not an easy task. It takes years and decades of hard work and commitment. But, they also require the enlisted things above, in order to become outstanding. It is necessary to note the things successful leaders do so that you too can become a more effective and a flourishing leader.

There’s something about the quality of a great leader that makes him or her stand out no matter the situation or the crowd. History’s greatest leaders have all had that quality, though they may not have all started out as leaders of many or even very few people. US president Dwight D. Eisenhower, for example, started out World War II as an obscure colonel who was recognized for his ability to think outside the box, though that that wasn’t what such thinking was called back then, but for little else. However, great leaders always seem to rise to the occasion when most needed, and Eisenhower certainly did that during the war. Never having held a single elective office in his entire life, once he’d retired from the military as a five-star General of the Army (one of only a very few in the history of the country) Eisenhower became the Republican nominee for president after Harry Truman’s second term, going on to easily win office. “The Eisenhower Years,” as his two-term presidency is often called, are now looked back upon as a serene time in US history and a period of strong growth.

Leaders Really Are All Around Us

Today, great leaders are all around us and inspiring us with many words and deeds. These leaders fall into a couple of different categories; the traditional types found in politics and business and nontraditional leaders seen throughout society and heading up various organizations or groups dedicated to the betterment of humankind. Traditional leaders, as always, seem to garner the lion’s share of the publicity but that may be because we’ve always thought of leaders in areas like business, politics and associated activities as being the men and women we look to first whenever a great crisis or other matter of importance arises. Certainly, these men and women have always seemed to have been ability to rise to the occasion and it’s no different in this new millennium than it was back in Eisenhower’s day or in Abraham Lincoln‘s or George Washington’s day. The point is, whether the crisis creates the leader or the leader is there and just waiting for the crisis it matters little. What matters is that these leaders seize the moment, inspire us all to greater things and continue to do so consistently and with a purpose.

The Greatest Leaders Inspire Us Greatly

One of the greatest US leaders of the 1960s, and who headed up no government or any political movement, was Martin Luther King Jr. His genius lay in the fact that he was able to harness the inchoate anger of African-Americans of the day, who faced brutal prejudice and institutional segregation in many parts of the American South and even in other areas of the country, and turned that anger to one of the greatest social movements of the 60s; the fight for civil rights and justice for all. That Martin Luther King Jr. did all this in a calm, steady voice that held no anger towards those against whom he was protesting — to the point where he even strongly stood for nonviolence against all — was historic and almost awe-inspiring. His “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” which he penned while being locked up in a Birmingham, Alabama jail for protesting against Jim Crow laws in that southern city, stands today as one of the greatest single letters to a people, in advocating for peaceful resistance and social change, in US history.

In other parts of the world, the great Indian leader Mohandas K. Gandhi, who worked tirelessly to replace British rule in India (known as the Raj), eventually succeeded in seeing the British turn over control of its former Crown colony, unfortunately only living long enough to see the culmination of his dreams before falling at an assassin’s hands in January 1948. Gandhi was a relentless campaigner for the rights of fellow Indians living under British rule, though he was just as tireless in advocating for peaceful, nonviolent resistance to the British, often enduring savage beatings at British hands before becoming a recognized leader of the entire Indian effort to free itself from British colonial administration. Gandhi, an extremely wise man, inspired by words and deeds the efforts of his people, and today we would call that “leading by example.”

Great leaders all seem to instinctively know that in order to be a great leader great effort must issue forth, including setting the example and the pace for the people whom they lead. Martin Luther King Jr. and Mahatma Gandhi (though his given name was Mohandas, Gandhi was most popularly known by the Hindu name “Mahatma”) knew that if a movement were to succeed the leaders of that movement had to demonstrate supreme commitment to the ideals of the movements that they were in fact heading up.

Great Leaders Know No Boundaries

Leaders who have inspired us in both the 20th and 21st centuries include people like Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft, the late Pope John Paul II and Oprah Winfrey. Microsoft today is probably one of the most well-known companies in the world and one or another of its products probably sit on 95% of all computers in use nowadays. John Paul II, in his great struggle in the 1980s and 90s against communism, especially after he was nearly killed in 1981 by an assassin’s bullet, stands as one of the most important religious leaders of the last hundred years. Even in his final days, as he lay on his deathbed, he demonstrated a respect for the dignity of life that was peerless, entering into the veiled world that lay beyond with grace and in full public view. Even millions, or perhaps even billions, of the world’s non-Catholics mourned his passing because he was a religious and a social justice icon, standing up for the rights of the oppressed in Eastern Europe, Latin America and Asia.

Since she got her television start in the 1980s, Oprah Winfrey has inspired more people in more ways than almost any other celebrity on TV in the last quarter century. Her talk shows have given more guests a chance at worldwide fame than any other television outlet ever has. If she even mentions the title of a book on one of her network shows, for example, the book becomes an instant New York Times bestseller. But Winfrey is more than just a superstar celebrity herself, because her tireless efforts and support on behalf of the poor and oppressed in Africa and in America have helped to inspire more people to pitch in and do what they can then most any other celebrity does through their own words or deeds. Again, Winfrey demonstrates why it’s necessary for great leaders to lead from the front, so to speak.

It Doesn’t Matter Whether They’re Made or Born

There’s always going to be a debate about whether the circumstances make the leader or the leader is made well before then, or perhaps even born well before then, and is the “right person at the right time.” Whether leaders are born or made, it’s fortunate for us that all of them seem to have an almost preternatural ability to know what to say and do to inspire those around them, even if it’s only for that brief, shining moment required of leaders in certain instances before they fade into the background yet again. What we know for certain, though, is that all of us are better for having them in our midst when they’re needed most.

Leadership has been defined as a process through which a person influences and motivates others to get involved in accomplishment of a particular task. This single definition, although universally accepted, fails to define the particular paths and ways of people who are deemed as great leaders. All great leaders had something unique about them and yet they were bound by greatness that helped them to lead masses to innovation and new ideologies. Since the oldest times known to men, masses have been led by efficient leaders. Such men and women have been responsible for ushering their people into a new and more modern world as we know of it now. Although times have changed, the contributions of these great leaders cannot be forgotten and although practices and ways of doing things have changed as well, the ways of these great leaders cannot be overlooked. What made them great might still be applicable in today’s day and age. Here is a look at some of the greatest leaders of all time and what made them great.

Mahatma Gandhi

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, better known as Mahatma Gandhi, was born an ordinary boy with a determination to excel at what he did. After completing law from London, he became the most important part of the Indian freedom struggle against the colonial rule.  His policy of non-violence and protest through civil disobedience eventually succeeded when he led his country to freedom in 1947. His main characteristics were resilience, knowledge, people-skills, motivational approach and leading by example. Gandhi was also a voracious reader who would read anything from books on financial planning to the holy books of every religion, and had a library containing thousands of books.

George Washington

George Washington, known as the founding father of the United States of America, was the leader of the American Revolution and the first president of US. He was a true visionary whose vision has endured for more than 200 years. What made Washington great was his foresight, vision, strategic planning and his ability to lead people to success.

Abraham Lincoln

The 16th president of the United States is also one of the most well known leaders of all time. He was in office during the American Civil War where he kept the people together and is the only reason that the nation did not break into smaller parts. He also ended slavery in the US by signing the Emancipation Proclamation. His greatest traits were his determination, persistence, beliefs and courage.

Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata

Indian industrialist Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata was a visionary and humanist whose business acumen laid the foundations of the Tata empire. His ambitious endeavors laid the foundations for India to become an industrialized powerhouse. Tata’s business ventures today produce textiles, steel, electricity, agricultural equipment, trucks, locomotives, and cement. One of the world’s top philanthropists of the 20th century, he established the Tata Group, wherein 66% of Tata Sons’ equity is held by Tata Trusts, which supports philanthropic work. A businessman who understood his role in society, he elevated the lives of those around him by providing them with a means of livelihood and charity.

Prophet Muhammad

One of the greatest leaders of all time, Prophet Muhammad led to the spread of Islam in and around Arabia. His contribution to Islam was such that it has become the second largest and the fastest growing religion of the world today. He united a chaotic society in the name of morality and humanity and led his people out of severe persecution and mistreatment. He led his people to a number of migrations and successful victories in wars against armies much larger than theirs. His greatest leadership qualities were his courage, leading by example, motivational approach, persistence and decision-making.

Mao Zedong

Mao was the leader of the Chinese Revolution and the founding father of the People’s Republic of China. He successfully endured and repelled the invasion by Japan during the World War II and subsequently transformed the economy of China into one of the major industrialized economies of the world. Because of him, China is a world power and a potent rival to the dominant United States of America.

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was the first South African president elected in fully democratic elections. Mandela was also the main player in the anti-apartheid movements in the country and served a lengthy prison sentence because of the same. This did not stop Mandela and in fact motivated him to devote his life to uniting his country and he successfully managed to do so after his release from an almost 30 year prison sentence. His main characteristics were his determination, persistence, focus and will.

Julius Caesar

Easily one of the greatest military leaders of all time, Caesar was also one of the best political leaders the world has ever seen. He led several campaigns with numerous victories and was single handedly responsible for the expansion of the Roman Empire. He was also responsible for reforming the Roman government and thus laying the foundation to a great empire. His greatest traits were his decisiveness, boldness, eagerness, motivation, opportunism and strategic planning.

Fidel Castro

Castro was the leader of the Cuban Revolution and later went to become the Prime Minister of Cuba. He also became the President of Cuba from 1976 to 2008. He endured many crisis, invasions and assassination attempts and took them in the stride. His vision for Cuba still stands and he has proved to be an effective leader and commander. His traits of courage, strategy, hiring the right people and dissemination of duties made him the leader he was.

Winston Churchill

Prime Minister of Britain from 1940 to 1945, Churchill led Great Britain against the Nazi Germany during the World War II. He teamed up with allies and consequently led to the defeat and downfall of Hitler. His tenure as the British Prime Minister was in a time of fear and destruction caused by Hitler and his allies. Churchill was known for his fearlessness, determination, unyielding perseverance and undying devotion to his goal.

Supply Chain Industry Predictions for 2012

The supply chain industry practitioners do not yet have the depth for creating a war for the supply chain talent. A supply chain industry leader will need flexibility and aggressiveness to respond to changing needs of the supply chain industry. The industry leaders are predicting ‘technology’ to play a vital role in the supply chain industry in 2012. People associated with the supply chain industry, like manufacturers, will need to be innovative and efficient when we look at the availability of fresh solutions to fix old problems.

Industry leaders believe that supply chain industry might persist to drive cost out as the pursuit of being a bower will take over the strategies. And what would that do? Well, it would hamper the unplanned events of all shapes and sizes with an increased risk exposure.

For surviving in the supply chain industry and achieving success in the over burdening competition of 2012, the industry leaders will have to take care of a few things. Here are a few predictions for 2012 predicted by the supply chain industry leaders.

Supply Chain Industry Prediction # 1: Planning will be long lived

There are ample advanced planning tools available today, yet the supply chain industry plans do not yield more than 50 percent accuracy. It is very important for the industry leaders to plan exercises, businesses and determine the end goal that needs to be executed, to have an organized structure in the supply chain industry. Planning will not be dead, it will now be used for the purpose it should serve – setting the end goals and determining the direction in which to head.

Supply Chain Industry Prediction # 2: Two-way flexibility would play a vital role

The supply chain industry has been ‘flat’ for several years and materials are outsourced from every corner of the world. The reason is that organizations are chasing low cost manufacturing. But, quite a few industry leaders have sacrificed lower costs in order to be connected to the customers and diminish time to market. So what could be done? The supply chain industry will be required to exhibit a level of two-way flexibility, so that it can address the wide reach of production, as well as the rising mix of customers.

Supply Chain Industry Prediction # 3: Centralized supply chain command and control

The supply chain industry’s warehousing sector is under pressure after a series of investigative reporting has uncovered the fragile situation. It is the ability to hold a flawless view of the happenings across the entire supply chain network that will determine how successful the organization is, and in 2012 supply chain industry might feel the need to have a centralized system of supply chain command and control. Even though technology is sprouting to make a single view of the supply chain possible, the challenge of contrasting parts still remains. Companies like DHL are now working on the standardization of its warehouse management system globally.

Supply Chain Industry Prediction # 4: Industry leaders might adopt social media tools

Many supply chain industry leaders are still in a crawling phase, referring to the use of social media tools to stay connected with the customers, colleagues and partners. But there are several prospective factors that will continue to drive greater adoption of the use of social media tool among industry leaders. This is expected to improve the organization’s external as well as internal communication.

Industry leaders will have to make sure that the supply chains gain real time visibility, understand the impact of the unplanned events and have fresh solutions ready so as to react to the prospective problems within a short period of time. Well, it looks like those supply chain industry leaders who take care and recognize the changes in the supply chain industry and immediately implement the POA to solve the issue, might turn out to be the real winners of the supply chain industry in 2012.

Yahoo Inc., the internet giant is set to name its next CEO very soon. The possible name on the list that has cleared many rounds and is likely to the nod is Scott Thompson, who runs eBay’s online payment unit PayPal.

It’s not yet announced when the announcement could come, but Yahoo could do it as close as tomorrow.  While there is a possibility of the situation changing, the board on Yahoo has recently been moving fast and aggressively in quest of a new leader for the Silicon Valley internet giant.

Yahoo had sacked its now ex-CEO, Carol Bartz, in September 2011. And since then, Yahoo was being run by its board and Tim Morse, interim Yahoo CEO, who previously was its CFO.

Yahoo – An Overview

Yahoo offers its customer services like mail, search, news and photo-sharing. In spite of being a Web pioneer that grew rapidly in the 1990s Yahoo has had a tough time in the recent years. It has been struggling to maintain its significance and advertising revenues facing competition from newer rivals in the internet world.

Ever since Bartz departed, considerable speculation about Yahoo’s future had been hovering around in the industry. Microsoft Corp. signed a nondisclosure agreement in November, to occupy a seat at the negotiating table if at all Yahoo decides to sell part or all of its business.

Yahoo apparently rejected a spontaneous proposal from Microsoft – takeover bid – which was worth about $44 billion. The global financial crisis subsequently hammered Yahoo’s share price and its current market value is about $20 billion.

There have been speculations about Yahoo’s move to satisfy frustrated shareholders. Why? Because Yahoo’s U.S. business has lost its sparkle and the company’s website is losing traffic and advertising revenue. Thanks to the Internet search leader Google Inc. and social networking giant, Facebook.

Expectations eyed at Scott Thompson

Scott Thompson, an industry leader, served as the president of eBay’s online payment service, PayPal, since January 2008, according to his bio-data on eBay’s website. Previously, Thompson was PayPal’s senior vice-president and chief technology officer.

A report articulated that Thompson’s selection would be a kind of a surprise because he had not been in previous reports about the potential successor to Bartz. Prior to working with ebay, Thompson worked at Inovant, a subsidiary of Visa formed to oversee global technology for the organization. He was also CIO of Barclays Global Investors and has worked at Coopers and Lybrand on information technology.

And, recently, Thompson ‘liked’ Yahoo on his Facebook page. Well, that’s what really makes this a possibility od considering Thompson the next Yahoo Inc. CEO.
