Elon Musk’s fascination with letter X continues. He announced plans on Saturday to ditch Twitter’s logo for a new Twitter name “X”. As a part of ongoing Twitter rebranding, Elon Musk announced plans to ditch Twitter’s bird logo for an “X” a reference to the CEO’s vision to create an all-encompassing “everything app” that may incorporate shopping and banking services, among other features.
Twitter Inc. owner Elon Musk is rebranding Twitter and taking the company in a new direction. One of the changes that he would like to introduce as part of Twitter rebranding is logo change.
Twitter name
As per Musk, the twitter name change by replace its well-known blue bird logo with an X is also because the advertisers have been slow to return.
Mike Proulx, research director at Forrester, said on Sunday that the wish for Twitter rebranding would further alienate Twitter’s original, and once fiercely loyal, user base.
“On the one hand, you can make the argument he would be getting rid of an iconic brand. On the other hand, he is signaling it is a new day for what was once Twitter and that the company is heading in a different direction with a different user base.”
Twitter logo change 2023
The billionaire Musk said in a Sunday post he wanted Twitter logo to change and polled his millions of followers whether they would favor changing the site’s color scheme from blue to black. He posted a picture of a stylized X against a black outer space-themed background.
“And soon we shall bid adieu to the Twitter brand and, gradually, all the birds,” he said.
The domain X.com now redirects users to Twitter. Musk said a new “interim” X logo will go live Sunday.
He did not respond to a request for comment on Twitter name change.
Under Musk’s tumultuous tenure since he bought Twitter in October, the company has changed its business name to X Corp, reflecting the billionaire’s vision to create a “super app” like China’s WeChat.
What lead to Twitter name changing to “X”
After he purchased Twitter for $44 billion, Musk formally merged his newly purchased social media company into a Nevada incorporated entity called X Corp.
“Buying Twitter is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app,” Musk said in October 2022.
Musk said then in a live forum that he envisions a service that “does everything sort of like Twitter, plus PayPal, plus a whole bunch of things, and all rolled into one, with a great interface.”
Elon Musk also launched and sold Zip2, a company that provided city travel guide software to newspapers for about $341 million. Musk earned $22 million out of the deal.
New CEO has to say about Elon Musk rebranding Twitter
Late Sunday afternoon, Twitter’s new CEO, Linda Yaccarino, tweeted: “It’s an exceptionally rare thing, in life or in business that you get a second chance to make another big impression. Twitter made one massive impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square.”
The Twitter name change, which was not evident on the website on Sunday evening, followed Musk’s recent admission that advertising revenue remains nearly half of what it once was. Also Twitter’s cash flow has been negative as a result of that and its heavy debt load.
Second Twitter name change, 2023
This is second time twitter logo change happened in 2023. In April, Twitter’s legacy blue bird logo was temporarily changed by Dogecoin’s Shiba Inu dog, helping drive a surge in the cryptocurrency’s market value.
Elon Musk rebranding Twitter
The company came under widespread criticism from users and marketing professionals when Musk announced early this month that Twitter would limit how many tweets per day various accounts can read.
The daily limits helped Meta Platforms-owned (META.O) rival service Threads, which crossed 100 million sign-ups within five days of its July 5 launch.
