It’s hard to tell which direction Apple Inc. plans to take with the iPhone 8 this year, when rumors, speculations, and revelations keep pouring from left, right and center. As with a lot of tech news and rumors, the iPhone 8 rumors should be taken with a grain of salt.
According to an unverified report from iDropNews, the Apple iPhone 8 will embody a vertically aligned dual-lens camera set up as well as a Touch ID sensor on the back. The Touch ID is going to be an interesting application, but it has proven tricky to implement. Samsung, working in collaboration with Synaptics, hoped to build the fingerprint sensor directly into the screen itself. The company had to make a last-minute alteration ascribed by the slower-than-desired development. A report out of Korea says, Samsung later plopped the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. Let’s hope the Apple iPhone 8 Touch ID doesn’t meet with the same fate.
Plans to ditch iPhone 8 Touch ID altogether
Currently, Apple Inc. is testing two iPhone 8 prototypes at Foxconn, its biggest manufacturing partner in China. The first iPhone 8 model features Touch ID on the rear, stacked between the dual camera system and rear flash and the Apple logo. The second model features the Touch ID underneath the edge-to-edge display glass. We’re hoping the second prototype becomes the official design for the iPhone 8.
According to a research note from Cower and Company analyst Timothy Arcuri obtained by MacRumors, Apple’s award-winning smart fingerprint sensor solution is low. While at the same time, Apple is unwilling to resolve these issues using outside help. The Cupertino company will need to remove Touch ID from the 5.8-inch iPhone 8 entirely and rely solely on facial/iris recognition. This is highly unlikely, but it is secure enough compared to the risky fingerprint sensor. Second, even if Apple decides to keep the Touch ID on the rear, it’s going to have to place it where it’s user-friendly.
iPhone 8 Features & Release Date
The mass production of iPhone 8 could be delayed until September unless Apple Inc. is able to finalize the iPhone 8 Touch ID specification by May.
The Apple iPhone 8 has also been called the iPhone X, iPhone Pro, or iPhone Edition. It is expected to feature an edge-to-edge glass design, wireless charging, longer battery, 3GB RAM, 521 PPI display, and a front-facing camera with 3D sensing capabilities, and improved water resistance.
Apple Inc. is widely rumored to be introducing three new iPhone this year, including two iterative updates to the iPhone 7. All three models are expected to be officially announced in September 2017.
